SEE YOU IN LONDON
Roll up, roll up, my dear listeners! It’s time to pull the curtain back on a little spruce-up I’ve been tinkering with behind the scenes. If you’ve been eagle-eyed, you might have noticed a bit of a shuffle in my name game. That’s right, I’m taking a leap across the pond of branding and landing with a new title that’s as fresh as a London morning: “See You in London”!
Now, don’t you worry, this isn’t one of those rebrands that sweeps away all the good stuff like a gust of the Great British breeze. This is more of a fusion, a smashing together of two great titans. “See You in London,” the beloved German-themed London website, is joining hands with “London Asked and Answered,” the website and podcast that’s become the crumpet to your tea, to create one jolly, unified front of London-loving goodness.
I’m streamlining like the Thames itself, merging my English-speaking fanfare with my German roots to bring you a single, splendid spot for all things London. And for those of you clutching your mugs in panic, fear not! Aside from the name, everything you cherish about the website and the podcast, from the cheeky chats to the savvy city insights, will stay as gloriously unchanged as the guards at Buckingham Palace.
Oh, and speaking of regal affairs, let’s not forget the crown jewel in my rebranding treasure chest — the book, “London Asked and Answered: Your Comprehensive Travel Guide to the Big Smoke.” It’s still your go-to tome for navigating the city’s cobbled streets and hidden pubs, packed with everything you’ve ever wanted to know about London town.
So, from 2024 onward, when you look for the website and podcast that has been your audio tour guide, you’ll find me waving at you under my new marquee, “See You in London.” It’s a promise that, although the sign above my door may change, the home inside will be just as warm, inviting, and bursting with London lore as ever.
Cheers to new beginnings, and as always, I can’t wait to see you in London!
So what’s happening in London?
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON
The Yuletide season in London is a spectacle to behold, and the switch-on of the Christmas lights across the city marks the official commencement of the holiday cheer. This 2023, the festivities are even brighter and more exciting, with iconic streets like Oxford Street and Regent Street, and enchanting locales such as Covent Garden and Carnaby Street, all partaking in this merry tradition with their own unique flair.
Oxford Street illuminated the skies on November 2nd, with over 5,000 stars comprising 300,000 tiny LED bulbs, creating a dazzling display of Christmas spirit. Not just a visual treat, but also a beacon of hope, as Oxford Street partners with the children’s charity Starlight to bring joy to hospitalised children.
Carnaby Street, known for its spectacular Christmas lights*, has switched on its lights on November 2nd as well. This year’s theme is “Carnaby Universe,” where neon colors and light waves will transform the area into a cosmic wonderland. In support of Choose Love Charity, a pop-up shop will offer limited edition products to aid refugees globally.
Regent Street followed suit on November 9th, where the street once again transformed into a pedestrian paradise filled with stalls, activities, and live performances.
Covent Garden cast its spell on November 7th, promising a new Christmas installation that’s sure to become a photogenic hotspot. Amidst the festive decor, a towering Christmas tree will stand outside the piazza, surrounded by a series of free events through December to stir up the festive mood.
The grand Trafalgar Square Christmas tree lighting is slated for December 7th, with carol singing choirs adding to the magical atmosphere from December 9th to 24th, beneath the grandeur of London’s tallest Christmas tree.
For Londoners and visitors alike, these events are more than just about lights; they’re a communal celebration of the season’s joy, a time to gather, to shop, to enjoy live music, and to be part of the city’s collective embrace of the festive spirit. London is about to get a whole lot brighter.
As London’s streets come alive with the twinkling of Christmas lights, casting a glow on the city’s festive cheer, there’s a particular sparkle beckoning from the historic Oxford Street. Beyond the shimmering lights, a doorway to the past opens at Selfridges, inviting you into the lavish and risqué world of Weimar-era entertainment. This is where the timeless allure of cabaret meets contemporary celebration, offering an experience that’s as effervescent as the season itself. Step off the bustling streets adorned with festive splendor and into the Kit Kat Club at Selfridges, where the spirit of Christmas is celebrated with a twist of cabaret magic.
CABARET AT SELFRIDGES
Step into a world where the champagne sparkles, the performances dazzle, and the atmosphere transports you to an era of indulgence and intrigue. This Christmas, the legendary Kit Kat Club is setting up its home in the iconic Selfridges on Oxford Street, offering a slice of Weimar Germany’s opulent cabaret life right in the heart of modern-day London.
From the 29th of November to the 31st of December, the fourth floor of Selfridges will transform into a hub of 1920s glamour, where the Kit Kat Club’s Prologue company will enchant guests with regular performances. The experience is immersive, with a specially designed bar echoing the era’s decadent aesthetics, and a window display on Duke Street that will capture the eyes and imagination of passersby.
For those who desire a touch of exclusivity, private tables can be booked, where guests will be treated to the finest champagne, exquisite wines, and a selection of cocktails crafted to perfection. Small plates will complement the libations, all savored as the backdrop of performances and the ambiance of the Kit Kat Club engulf you.
This isn’t just any pop-up; it’s a foray into a time of cultural richness and artistic rebellion. As you step into this experience, every sense will be engaged, from the visual splendor of the decor to the auditory delight of music and performance, all while the taste of luxury tickles your palate.
The Kit Kat Club at Selfridges isn’t just about the spectacle; it’s also a retail experience. On the Ground Floor, visitors will find merchandise and souvenirs unlike anything seen before. These are keepsakes from a time travel experience, tangible memories of a Christmas season spent in the lap of cabaret luxury.
The club operates Monday to Saturday from 12 pm to 10 pm and on Sundays from 12 pm to 5.30 pm, with altered hours on select dates. Note that the doors will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, giving even the performers a rest in the height of the holiday season.
For those spellbound by the cabaret and wishing to delve further into this entrancing world, there’s the opportunity to witness the full splendor of the Cabaret Musical*. Tickets to this extravaganza are the keys to an evening of unbridled entertainment, a night where the heart of cabaret beats the strongest.
After immersing yourself in the glitz and glamour of the Kit Kat Club at Selfridges, why not continue your festive journey back in time at the Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre? Swap the cabaret’s modern twist on Weimar decadence for the regal opulence of Tudor England. Here, within the walls of Henry VIII’s storied residence, you’ll trade neon lights for the soft glow of lanterns and the echoes of jazz for the harmonies of carolers dressed in period garb. It’s a seamless transition from the electric energy of contemporary London to the stately charm of a Christmas past, steeped in history and royal tradition.

Time for your questions
Carolynn asks: “I’ve been wondering about tipping etiquette in London, especially regarding hotel staff like housekeeping or bellboys. What’s your take on this? Should we tip them?”
That’s a great question and something I often think about when I travel! For me, carrying cash in London is essential mainly for tipping hotel staff. I firmly believe that everyone is doing their job enhancing your vacation or holiday experience, so yes, they deserve a tip.
When it comes to bellboys, I make it a point to tip them both during check-in and check-out. They play a significant role in the first and last impressions of the hotel, and their efforts in handling luggage and other services shouldn’t go unnoticed.
Housekeeping, on the other hand, takes care of your room every single day of your stay. They ensure that your living space is comfortable, clean, and welcoming, which is crucial for a pleasant hotel experience. Therefore, I always make sure to tip them as well.
On the day of check-out, I take a moment to write a note to the housekeeping staff, thanking them for their work and dedication in making my stay feel like a dream. Along with this note, I leave a tip. This small gesture of appreciation not only acknowledges their hard work but also adds a personal touch to the gratitude I feel towards their service.
Remember, tipping is a personal choice and a way to show appreciation for exceptional service. While it’s not mandatory, it’s a kind gesture that can make a difference to those who work hard to ensure your stay is memorable.
Germain asks: “We’re staying at The Rembrandt Hotel near South Kensington station in a week, and I’m super excited! We’re aware of the nearby museums and Harrods, as well as the Brompton Oratory. Could you suggest any hidden gems in the area, like unique shops, restaurants, or pubs?”
That’s fantastic to hear! South Kensington is a treasure trove of delightful spots. Apart from the well-known attractions, there are several hidden gems that you must check out.
For a unique shopping experience, visit the V&A Shop. It’s not just any museum shop; it offers a range of unique gifts and art-inspired items. Also, Daunt Books on Fulham Road is a bibliophile’s dream, with an Edwardian interior and a vast collection of books.
When it comes to dining, ‘CERU South Kensington’ offers an exciting menu with Eastern Mediterranean flavors. If you’re looking for classic British fare, ‘The Builder’s Arms’ on Britten Street is a charming pub with a cozy atmosphere. For a delightful Italian experience, ‘Margaux’ on Old Brompton Road provides exquisite dishes in a chic setting.
Don’t miss ‘Muriel’s Kitchen’ for a homely, British culinary experience, or ‘The Kensington Creperie’ for some sweet and savory crepes. If you’re in the mood for a café, ‘The Mosaic Rooms’ on Cromwell Road is a hidden art space with a lovely café serving Arabic-style coffee and snacks.
Lastly, for a tranquil escape, visit the nearby Chelsea Physic Garden. It’s London’s oldest botanical garden and a green haven of peace.
Enjoy your stay at The Rembrandt Hotel*, and I hope these recommendations make your London visit even more memorable!
Maria asks: “We’ll be in London in early December and are looking to enjoy an Indian meal one evening. Our hotel is on Elystan Street in Chelsea. Could you recommend a good Indian restaurant nearby?”
Certainly! Chelsea has some excellent Indian restaurants that you should definitely try. One notable option near Elystan Street is ‘Rasoi’. Located on Lincoln Street, it’s known for its gourmet Indian cuisine in a charming setting, offering a fusion of traditional and contemporary dishes.
Another great choice is ‘Amaya’, situated in the heart of Belgravia. This restaurant is slightly farther but well worth the visit for its unique grill-centric menu and stylish décor.
If you’re looking for something more casual yet equally delicious, ‘Dishoom Kensington’ on Derry Street is a great choice. Inspired by the old Irani cafes of Bombay, it offers a cozy atmosphere and a diverse menu.
Lastly, ‘Chutney Mary’ on St. James’s Street is renowned for its sophisticated take on Indian cuisine and elegant ambiance, perfect for a special evening out.
Each of these restaurants offers a unique dining experience, showcasing the rich flavors and diverse culinary traditions of India. Enjoy your meal and your time in London!
Lucas asks: “I’m planning a trip to London for May next year. I’ve heard that the Queensway Hotel is favorably located. Do you have any opinions or insights about this?”
Absolutely, the Queensway Hotel* in London is indeed well-regarded for its location. Situated in the Bayswater area, it offers convenient access to several key attractions and transport links. The hotel is close to Hyde Park, offering a great opportunity for leisurely strolls or morning jogs in one of London’s most iconic green spaces.
Additionally, it’s near Paddington Station, which is not only handy for rail and tube connections but also for the Heathrow Express, making airport transfers quite efficient. The area around Queensway and nearby Notting Hill is vibrant, with a variety of dining options, quaint cafes, and shops. It’s also a short distance from Kensington Palace and Gardens, adding a touch of royal charm to your stay.
Overall, Queensway Hotel’s location is indeed a major plus for tourists who want to explore central London with ease. However, as with any accommodation, it’s always a good idea to check recent reviews for the latest insights on service and facilities. Enjoy your trip to London next May!
